Why Representation Matters in Toys
Toys have a special place in our hearts. While dolls and toys are essentially used for enjoyment and fun or keeping your little one occupied and quiet for a moment, they play a much bigger, vital role in child’s development.
A child’s learning journey starts with recognizing sensations and expressions, and basic sounds to communicate. And through toys, they’re able spot and differentiate colors, shapes, and sizes from one another. More broadly, they help children form connections, make friends, engage with others, and understand that they are a part of a wider community.
Building Self-Confidence & Love
Dolls and toys also have a role in the development of self-esteem. Just like children’s stories, kids need toys that they could relate to. They need dolls, action figures, characters from the book that, not only those that they could look up to, but also those that reflect, resemble, and represent themselves.
Representation in toys matter because it allows children to see the colorful diversity of the world around.
It is important that we encourage positive characters, reinforce positive imagery, and help them be proud of every aspect that makes up their identity. As kids see themselves through their dolls & toys, they see affirmation to become more proud of who they are and be happy with what they have been given with. By teaching kids the diversity of the world, we help foster a more inclusive community for them to live and grow up in.
